AP Calculus

For new and experienced AP teachers, this workshop includes College Board resources, released exams and student samples

Learning outcomes

After attending this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Align their instruction with the goals of the AP Calculus course
  • Identify the skills and knowledge that the exam will assess, and identify the tasks and materials for which students might need more preparation
  • Draft a syllabus that meets the curricular requirements for the course
  • Make equitable access a guiding principle in designing instruction

Workshop materials

At every AP Calculus workshop held by the College Board, each participant receives a copy of the Workshop Handbook, which contains:

  • AP Calculus Course Description
  • AP Course Audit information
  • Sample syllabus for AP Calculus and a Syllabus Development Guide
  • AP Calculus free-response materials (student samples, scoring guidelines and commentary)
  • Multiple-choice questions and answers from the AP Calculus 2008 Released Exam

Curriculum Module: The Mean Value Theorem

The Mean Value Theorem is considered by many mathematicians to be the most important theorem in calculus. It is used most often to prove other theorems and is closely related to the Fundamental Theorems of Calculus. In this module, teachers and ultimately students will come to better understand the Mean Value Theorem by exploring its meaning algebraically, graphically and numerically. The first two lessons in the module have students explore the Mean Value Theorem geometrically, leading them to the hypotheses of the theorem and thereby to a better understanding. The third lesson requires the student to further investigate the hypotheses of the theorem and verbally communicate the conclusions that follow in various contexts. These lessons are:

  • Introducing the Mean Value Theorem
  • Hypotheses of the Mean Value Theorem
  • Practice in Applying the Mean Value Theorem
