Pre-AP Strategies in English: Composition

Expand your teaching skills, techniques and knowledge in this workshop

This one-day workshop will provide middle and high school teachers with the tools to teach writing on demand, paraphrasing and summarizing. In addition, participants will develop strategies for analyzing visual and written material. The workshop incorporates hands-on activities that will enable participants to experience the subject matter from a student's perspective and will aid teachers in applying the new strategies to their classroom practice.

This workshop conforms to the College Board's mission, particularly in promoting access and equity; National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) standards; standards and skills in AP English Literature and AP English Language; and the AP Vertical Teams approach.

Workshop Goal:

  • Participants will deepen their understanding of various approaches to teaching composition and develop research-based strategies for teaching college-level writing and analytical skills.

Learning Outcomes:

After attending this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Identify reading and writing skill sets students need to become successful writers.
  • Teach paraphrasing and writing a summary.
  • Teach an author's purpose, intended audience and goals.
  • Analyze an author's language.
  • Transfer new strategies to classroom practice.
